The topical issue "Many Particle Spectroscopy of Atoms, Molecules, Clusters and Surfaces" of the European Physical Journal D (EPJD) has been published. This topical issue, edited by Alexei Grum-Grzhimailo, Yuri Popov, Elena Gryzlova and Andrey V. Solov’yov, presents contributions from the participants of the International conference "Many Particle Spectroscopy of Atoms, Molecules, Clusters and Surfaces" (MPS-2016) which took place at the Physics Department of the Lomonosov Moscow State University from August 23 to 26, 2016.
The MPS-2016 brought together nearly 100 participants from 20 countries to discuss the latest developments in the field of radiation interaction with matter. The scientific program of the conference included 37 invited talks and two sessions with poster presentations. It was focused on the actual experimental and theoretical problems of the interaction of radiation of different nature (electrons, photons, atoms, heavy charged particles) with various targets – atoms, molecules, clusters, surfaces and nanostructures.
The wealth of new information about the processes in the universe supplied by space vehicles, the issues of the influence of space factors on biological tissues, development of ion-beam cancer therapy, the creation of new materials and nanostructures, as well as many other current scientific challenges lead to the need for fundamental research, both experimental and theoretical, on collisions of charged particles and neutral atoms with matter.
The contributions to this topical issue present original research results from some of the participants on both experimental and theoretical studies involving many particle spectroscopy of atoms, molecules, clusters and surfaces.
